Dental Fillings

Dental Fillings in Ilford and Essex

Dental fillings are used to fill holes (cavities) as a result of decay or tooth wear.  There are different types of fillings, each suitable for different cavities.  Most patients have a local anaesthetic injection to numb the area while the filling is being done.

WHITE FILLINGS as a replacement for amalgam (silver) fillings

White fillings can safely replace amalgam (silver) fillings with tooth coloured restorations giving you a healthy and natural look back to your teeth.  Because we are much more conscious of our smile, we can choose white fillings as a natural looking alternative to an amalgam (silver) filling, which we also recommend as a healthier alternative.

Traditional amalgam fillings contain a combination of metals including silver, tin, copper and mercury which makes it extremely durable and able to withstand the grinding and chewing of your back teeth, where it is less visible, over long periods of time.

White fillings have been considered less durable than amalgam fillings but there are now improved materials on the market with properties similar to amalgam, which are proving to be very successful.

WHITE FILLINGS

A white filling, also known as a “composite” filling can be bonded (glued) to the tooth structure and is easier to mould making it far more effective in treating chipped teeth or teeth that are more visible.  Because it is tooth coloured, the filling is barely visible in the mouth.

Tooth coloured or white fillings can be used to build up a chipped or cracked tooth to restore their appearance aesthetically.  White fillings also work really well to close gaps, reshape uneven or short teeth resulting in an improved smile.
